The pelvic floor is a crucial part of the body that often goes unnoticed until problems arise. It plays a vital role in supporting the bladder, bowel, and uterus, and is essential for maintaining continence, sexual function, and overall core stability. Unfortunately, pelvic health issues are common among women. A lot of factors contribute to a weak pelvic floor. Urinary incontinence, uncontrollable flatulence, and painful organ prolapse are some of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. A recent study conducted by Origin revealed that 8 out of 10 women struggle with pelvic health issues.

Tips for maintaining a healthy pelvic floor


Maintaining a healthy pelvic floor is essential for overall well-being. Regular pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels, help strengthen these muscles. Let’s look at a few essential tips that will promote a healthy pelvis.  Maintain a healthy weight

Today’s lifestyle has indeed made it an uphill task for women to maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can aggravate pelvic floor issues to a great extent. Obesity increases pressure on the pelvic floor resulting in adverse consequences such as urinary incontinence. Maintaining a healthy weight ensures you don’t make things difficult for your pelvic floor. Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly are the best practices to maintain a healthy weight.  Lift heavy objects with care

Lifting heavy objects can put pressure on the pelvic floor. You have to lift heavy objects the right way to avoid unnecessary complications. For example, lifting objects from the floor without bringing them closer to your body is not recommended.  Do pelvic floor exercises

It is important to do certain pelvic floor exercises to strengthen your muscles. Pelvic floor muscles become weak for several reasons including pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, ageing etc. Kegel exercises play an important role in making pelvic floor muscles strong. To strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, sit comfortably and squeeze the muscles 10 to 15 times. Hold each squeeze for a few seconds for the best results.  Drink enough water

Increase your water intake to avoid constipation and increase your bladder’s capacity. Include milk, juice, fruits and vegetables with high water content in your diet to keep your pelvic floor muscles healthy and eliminate the risk of unnecessary pressure on pelvic muscles. Limit alcohol and caffeine

Caffeine is known to make incontinence worse as it irritates the bladder. Alcohol too makes incontinence worse by increasing the frequency of urination. Limit the intake of alcohol and caffeine to ensure your pelvic health disorder doesn’t worsen.  Maintain your posture 

Your posture contributes to pelvic health in many ways. Pelvic floor muscles work with other core muscle groups such as the spinal cord, diaphragm, and abdominals. Wrong posture leads to an imbalance in the body, resulting in some muscles carrying more load than others. The pelvic floor muscles get affected due to the disproportion in weight.
